Affiliate disclosure
Who pays us, and how it can't buy a recommendation.
Last updated 18 September 2026.
Unmarkup is free to use and independent. This page explains how we make money, so you can weigh what we say with full information. The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and the CAP Code require this disclosure. So do our own principles.
How we make money
When you click certain links on Unmarkup and buy something at the retailer they lead to, the retailer pays us a small commission on the sale. You pay the same price you would if you had gone to that retailer directly. The commission comes out of the retailer's own margin, not out of your pocket.
We may also make money from a newsletter we publish, or from products we may create ourselves in future. If either becomes relevant, we say so on this page.
Which networks we use
- Awin. A UK affiliate network that covers Boots, LookFantastic, Cult Beauty, Space NK, John Lewis Beauty and other UK beauty retailers. Application pending.
- Amazon Associates UK. Amazon's own affiliate programme, covering products sold on amazon.co.uk. Application pending.
- Impact.com. A separate affiliate network that covers Sephora UK and other brands not on Awin. Planned.
This list is complete. If we join another network, we add it here first.
What brands do NOT pay us for
- To be included on Unmarkup.
- To be reviewed favourably.
- To be named as the best alternative when we compare products.
- To keep a specific criticism off the page.
- To feature in our newsletter or on our social channels.
No brand, PR agency, or influencer marketing platform has paid Unmarkup for any of the above. If that ever changes, this page changes with it, and we tell you first.
The editorial firewall
When we pick which alternative product to recommend as the best pick, the person making that call does not see the commission rate that would result from that pick. Best pick is chosen on formula, dose, and price. Commission rate is a separate consideration handled elsewhere in our workflow. That separation is built into how we work, not a promise we make on this page.
The practical result: sometimes we send you to a retailer where our commission is small, or to a brand's own website where our commission is zero, because that is the right recommendation.
How to tell an affiliate link
Any external link to a retailer where we may earn a commission is marked in the app and on the site. In the app, the button says "Buy at [Retailer]" and a small marker (£) indicates it is a commissioned link. Non-commissioned links (like brand websites where we have no affiliate relationship) do not carry that marker.
Cookies and tracking
When you click through to a retailer, the affiliate network sets a cookie on the retailer's site so the retailer knows Unmarkup referred you. That cookie identifies the referring publisher (Unmarkup) but not you personally. Its lifetime is set by the retailer and usually ranges between one day and 30 days.
